Day 18 – Today we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. and his tireless fight for equality for all. Through his peaceful protests, Martin Luther King, Jr. brought attention to the unequal treatment of African-Americans. He was the catalyst of the Civil Rights Movement. Many people watched how King’s relentless fight pressed Congress to enact the Civil Rights Act (The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin). Many were motivated to undertake their own fights. The Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act were the result of environmentalists following in the footsteps of Martin Luther King, Jr.

“It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
Thank you Dr. King for paving the way. There is still much work to be done, when it comes to equality and caring for the environment, but you have shown that these things are well worth the fight.
Tomorrow, a beloved American snack and a more environmentally friendly way of enjoying it.
