Day 200 – Yes! Barbie is on board to help save the planet! She has been an astronaut, veterinarian, chef, soccer player and so much more. However, Barbie is now in her most important role. She is helping address the plastic pollution problem. The Barbie Loves the Ocean Collection is made from 90% recycled plastic.

Mattel – “Barbie knows we need to do more today to provide a world of possibilities and better future for the next generation. We’re working towards Mattel’s goal of 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials in both products and packaging by 2030. We’ll be leveraging the Barbie platform across these actions:
- Our goal is to reach 95% recycled or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper or wood fiber in our packaging by 2021 and by 2030 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials.
- By 2030, the brand is on track to achieve 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials in our product, and more than 75% fibers made of sustainable materials in its fashions. * (* fashions for Barbie playline including natural and recycled synthetic fibers.)
- We’ll advocate for the environment using our platforms and Barbie as a role model to educate and promote sustainable everyday behaviors that will help inspire action.
Mattel is also offering a Take Back Program. The PlayBack program will accept Barbie®, Matchbox® and MEGA™ toys for recycling with other brands to be added in the future. With Mattel PlayBack, when possible, they’ll recover the materials and reuse them as recycled content in new toys. For materials that cannot be repurposed as recycled content into new toys, Mattel PlayBack will either downcycle those materials into other plastic products or convert them from waste to energy.
Join Barbie in her mission to stop plastic waste and let’s try to get there before 2030!
Tomorrow, running out of time with the plastic pollution problem.
